Carpeted stairs are one of the first things homeowners want to update. Hardwood stairs look cleaner, are easier to keep free of dust and pet hair, and instantly modernize a home. But stairs are more involved than flat flooring. Here's what to know before you start.
Why Are Homeowners Replacing Stair Carpet?
Easier cleaning: no more trapped dust, pet hair and allergens.
Durability: carpet on stairs wears out and flattens quickly.
Style: hardwood treads and modern railings are a big visual upgrade.
Resale appeal: buyers expect hardwood stairs in updated homes.
What Are Your Options?
Full replacement treads and risers
The old treads are removed and replaced with new solid hardwood treads and new risers. This gives the cleanest, longest-lasting result.
Cap-over treads
New hardwood caps are installed over the existing stair structure after the carpet and nosings are cut back. It's often faster and less disruptive.
Refinishing existing hardwood
Some homes have hardwood treads hiding under the carpet. If they're in good shape, they may just need sanding and refinishing.
What Might You Find Under the Carpet?
Removing carpet sometimes reveals surprises: squeaky or loose treads, damaged nosings, uneven risers, or plywood treads that were never meant to be exposed. These can be fixed, but it's one reason an in-person assessment matters before you get a final price.
What Affects the Cost of Hardwood Stairs?
Number of steps and landings.
Straight vs curved or winder stairs (curved stairs take more labour).
Full replacement vs cap-over treads.
Wood species, stain and finish.
Railing work: new spindles or glass railings.
Carpet removal and disposal.
How Do You Match Stairs to Your Floors?
Matching new stair treads to existing hardwood or vinyl is one of the trickiest parts of the job. Options include stair-matched nosings made by your flooring's manufacturer, or custom-stained solid treads. If you're also replacing floors, doing stairs at the same time gives the best match.
How Long Does It Take?
A standard straight staircase usually takes a few days, depending on the method and whether stain and finish are applied on site. Some homeowners plan it alongside a full flooring installation so everything is done at once.
Stair Renovation FAQs
Are hardwood stairs slippery?
They can be, especially in socks. A matte finish, a stair runner or anti-slip treatments help, particularly in homes with kids, older adults or pets.
Can I keep my existing railing?
Often, yes. Many homeowners keep the railing and just refinish it, while others upgrade to glass or metal spindles for a modern look.
