2026 Flooring Trends: Warm Woods, Wide Planks & Waterproof Floors
The biggest flooring trends for 2026: warm wood tones replacing grey, wide planks, herringbone, waterproof rigid-core vinyl, matte finishes and hardwood stairs.

Flooring styles are changing. The cool grey floors that filled new builds and renovations over the past decade are giving way to warmer, more natural looks, and homeowners are putting just as much weight on durability and easy care as on style. Here are the flooring trends we're seeing in homes across Toronto and the GTA this year, and how to choose one that will still look good in ten years.
1. Warm Wood Tones Are Replacing Grey
Honey, natural oak, caramel and light walnut tones are in; cool greys are out. Warm floors pair well with the creamy whites, beiges and natural materials that are popular in kitchens and living spaces right now. If you're replacing grey laminate or vinyl, a natural oak tone is the safest long-term choice.
2. Wider (and Longer) Planks
Wide planks of 7 inches or more mean fewer seams and make open-concept main floors feel bigger. Because wide boards move more with humidity, engineered hardwood is usually a better choice than solid wood for wide-plank floors in Ontario.
3. Herringbone and Chevron Patterns
Herringbone adds movement and character to entryways, hallways, dining rooms and even whole main floors. It takes more material and labour than a straight lay, so it's often used as a feature area rather than everywhere.
4. Waterproof Floors Throughout the Home
Rigid-core (SPC) luxury vinyl and water-resistant laminate now look realistic enough that many homeowners use them on main floors, not just basements. For families with kids and pets, a single waterproof floor that runs through the kitchen, living room and mudroom is one of the most practical upgrades you can make.
5. Matte, Wire-Brushed and Natural Finishes
High-gloss floors show every scratch and footprint. Matte and wire-brushed finishes hide everyday wear, feel more natural, and suit the warm-wood trend.
6. Replacing Carpet on Stairs
Carpeted stairs are one of the first things homeowners replace. Hardwood treads with new risers, often paired with glass railings or slim metal pickets, instantly modernize a home and are easier to keep clean. Matching new stair treads to existing floors is the tricky part, so it pays to work with a staircase installation specialist.
7. One Continuous Floor
Instead of different flooring in every room, homeowners are choosing one floor across the whole main level for a cleaner look and fewer transitions. It's also easier to maintain.
8. Sustainable and Low-Emission Products
More buyers are asking about responsibly sourced wood and low-VOC finishes and adhesives, especially for nurseries, bedrooms and homes with allergy concerns.
How Do You Choose a Trend That Lasts?
Pick a natural, mid-tone colour; extremes (very dark or very grey) date fastest.
Choose the material for the room first, then the style.
Look at samples in your own home's light, morning and evening.
Think about pets, kids and how much maintenance you want.
